“The problems to dealt with by Councils today are often so complex that they present daunting challenges to turn them into opportunities and strengths.
In different ways the difficulties faced by local Government a century and a half ago were equally daunting – in fact, became insurmountable in Adelaide after the first few years, leading to a suspension of activity in 1843 for several years.
Worsnop’s original “History of Adelaide” outlines with dry humour and blunt comment the progress of starting up Local Government from nothing, giving us today a sound footing by overcoming the trials and tribulations of the first forty years.
This facsimile edition was published by The Corporation of the City of Adelaide, jointly funded as an endorsed activity by The Australian Bicentennial Authority to celebrate Australia’s Bicentenary in 1988.
The dustjacket is a 1988 innovation which the 1878 edition did not have.”
