"Douglas Jerrold, close friend of Charles Dickens and literary sparring partner of Thackeray, leading light of satirical weekly Punch and indefatigable campaigner against social and political oppression, militarism and capital punishment, died in 1857 at the height of his fame.  Thackeray and Dickens both acted as pallbearers at his funeral.  A contemporary critic remarked of this famous triad of humorists that 'it is hardly possible to discuss the merits of any one of them without referring to the two'.  And yet there has been no biography of 'the wittiest man in London' since 1918, and most of his writings have sunk into oblivion."
