"Ludwig Leichhardt was a strange and tragic figure, a man round whose name legends have been woven for a hundred and twenty years.  When he landed in Sydney in 1842, aged 28, no more unlikely bushman and explorer could be imagined.  He was a German scholar, a moody erratic dreamer o slight physique.  His sight was so poor that in all his journeying through the wild country he seldom carried a gun because he could not see well enough to hit anything.
Yet this was the man who led an expedition 3,000 miles through the completely unknown country of North Queensland, around the Gulf of Carpentaria, to a little outpost on the far Northern Territory, defying hunger, thirst and the spears of wild tribesmen."
