“The Holroyds, the Laceys and Brunnings live in Spindle Bottom.  At school they’re known as the country children, set apart from the rest.  To Hetty Holroyd and her friends, the town children seem a tough bunch and kids like Merry and Pet Kingshill, with their unhappy home, make Hetty glad of her country refuge.
But suddenly it’s a refuge no longer.  The local landowner opens his great house to the public and hordes from the town begin to invade Spindle Bottom.  People who care nothing for the country ways.  People like Merry and Pet Kingshill.  Hetty’s safe world is crumbling around her.  Then Merry and Pet run away from home.  Rashly, Hetty promises not to betray their secret hiding-place.  But they’re in a bad way and need help.  How long can they go on living rough?  As events take a desperate turn, Hetty finds herself faced with a vital decision.  She must act fast but is she already to late?.”
