The Lotus Eaters

by Gerald Green

Longmans, Green & Co., 1960, [Second Impression], hardcover, dustjacket

Very Good Condition, a little edge and shelf wear,

'In this huge teeming book, the gold-plated babylon of a Florida pleasure resort is contrasted with the work of a group of archaeologists who are unearthing in the vicinity the remains of a primitive settlement.  The novel's two chief characters vividly point the contrast: Tom Sorrento, one-time football hero, a man of humble origin who bewildered his family by becoming an anthropologist; and Ira deKay, the PR man and smart operator, with a hand in every racket and a rake-off in every deal, the smiler who can "organise" anything and anyone - Ira, the pleasure merchant.  The clash between these two men provides the theme of the story made tense and ironic by the fact that both are in love with the same woman.'
