"David Breto is a successful plastic surgeon with a fashionable practice in London.  Pleasure-loving, cynical and enamoured with is own success, he is quite stunned when a woman patient sues him for scarring her face and wins the case.  In order to give his reputation time to recover, he decides to go out to Burma to see his father, the British Consul in Mandalay, who is dying of lung cancer.  On arrival he finds his father completely under the influence of an Australian missionary of whom Breton and agnostic, instinctively disapproves.  As time goes on, however, Breton finds himself being compellingly attracted to the Australian's strong personality.  The relationship which develops between these two men involves David Breton in a series of strange adventures, which alter the whole course of his life."
