“West Coast Stories offers a selection from the prose writings of members of the Western Australian Writers.  Edited by H. Drake-Brockman, whose work as an anthologist, apart from her own output as a creative writer, has proved distinguished and popular, the book must be unique.  It is in fact a tribute to the memory of Joseph Furphy, the famous Victorian author of Such is Life, who died and was buried in the West.
The works of 23 authors are included.  The names of some of them – Murdoch, Prichard, Casey – are already part of the history of Australian literature.  M. L. Skinner will always be remembered for her collaboration with D. H. Lawrence as well as for her own work.  Of others, most are well known in Australia, and some have made a reputation abroad: a glance at the biographical notes that are included will show the range of the distinctions these writers have gained.  Among the young writers of note are Randolph Stow, G. M. Glaskin, and Donald Stuart.  The historians Malcolm Uren and Alexandra Hasluck salt fiction with fact; and Professor Ida Mann appears for the first time as a descriptive writer of considerable power.”
