"In 1837 an eighteen-year-old girl ascended the throne of Great Britain.  Within three years she had not only established herself and the Crown as a major power in politics but shed totally the influence of her dominating mother and in addition charmed the hardened sophisticate, her Prime Minister Lord Melbourne, to the extent that he loved her hopelessly until the day he died.
Such was the woman who the sensitive Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha married unwillingly in 1840.  Much has been written about that marriage but less is known of the angry struggle which took place between husband and wife before Victoria finally surrendered to her love for him.  This is the story of that love, of the struggle between the pride of an iron-willed autocrat and the physical and emotional passion of a woman for a man she eventually loved better than herself or her own power."
