“Hugh and Joanna Cherry and their mother, newly arrived from Ireland, were stranded at Port Macquarie on the coast of New South Wales.  It was 1870, and their father, a manager of a gold mine many miles inland, had been injured on the job.  They were very anxious to join him, and there was only one route – the old aboriginal track over the mountains.  Brushing aside warnings of bushrangers, precipitous mountains and bottomless ravines, and the danger of getting lost, the family set off bravely over the mountains, on horseback.  The people they meet on their way, and the adventures they become involved in, make a thrilling story set in a colourful background of early Australia.”
