“In this romantic novel of the years following the Crucifixion, Dr. Slaughter tells the story of Quintus Volusianus, a young centurion turned physician to Tiberious who is sent by the ailing Emperor to Jerusalem to bring back the miracle healer Jesus and who is unaware of the tragedy at Calvary.  Quintus meets the wealthy merchant, Joseph of Arimathea, in whose tomb the body of Jesus had been sealed; and Veronica, Joseph’s niece, who cherishes the veil upon which the imprint of the Saviour’s face remains.  Quintus hears that the veil has a mystic power to cure and that it transformed Veronica from a pathetic cripple to a beautiful young woman.  She and Quintus fall in love and marry, and together Joseph and Pilate, who has been removed from the office of procurator, they sail for Rome.  But again Quintus is too late, for Tiberius is dead and Caligula rules in his place.”
