“Nelson, 1879.  The brothers Harry and Tom Newman together drive their first Royal Mail coach from railhead at Foxhill to Hampden (now Murchison), sixty kilometres along the rough track that heads across rivers and mountain saddles int eh general direction of Westland.
One hundred years later the Newman coach lines are running daily scheduled services from Nelson to Christchurch and the West Coast and over to Picton to connect with the Cook Strait ferries.  In the North Island they are running from Wellington to Hawkes’s Bay and to Wanganui, and from Patea to New Plymouth and Auckland.  And every day of the year Newmans Tours are carrying tourists in comfort and safety throughout the length and breadth of both islands.
This book does full justice to a remarkable enterprise.  Its authors spent hundreds of hours yarning to old Newman drivers and other staff and offer us an abundance of stories – comic, revealing, hair-raising – that is supplemented by a wide range of unusual photographs.”
