"Between the tropics of Capricorn and Cancer, with an occasional projection to the north or south, live sixty-three million people, in over fifty different countries.  They have a common heritage in that each is a citizen of the British Colonial Empire.  Today these men and women are the material of living history.  On their behalf Colonial administrators, doctors, economists, teachers and politicians are fighting tropical disease; fighting to remove the shadows in the sun.
Often a disease which has a twenty per cent death-rate among Europeans has an eighty per cent death-rate among native inhabitants.  Human difficulties are immense for the people are usually simple, ignorant, or prejudiced, with age-old customs and habits dictating their conduct,  Against this background the story of the fight against leprosy in Fiji, malaria in Ceylon, and typhus in Malaya, to give but three examples, is related i an informative but informal manner, which makes it easily comprehensible to the intelligent layman."
