'This book is dedicated to the last of the South American Indians who still live largely as their fathers did before them.  It presents an insight into a life-style and culture characterised above all by the harmonious interplay of man and nature.  It describes the various magico-religious rituals, dances, myths and taboos that maintain this unity of man and his environment, his ancestors and the future, and give the community the strength that unites it.
This book comprises a unique collection of material that is the result of ten years of highly motivated research, often under the most difficult conditions.  Many of the photographs, such as those of the healing rites of the Choco Indians, have not been published before.  For the ordinary traveller, most of the Indian groups described in this book are totally inaccessible, and the author was only able to win their trust by living and working with them over a long period of time.'
