"If you were in a hurry you could travel from Australia to Britain in a week - or less.  Airline schedules are constantly being speeded up, and a time will soon come when London will be only a couple of days' flying distance from Sydney for ordinary passengers and mails.  This whirr of speed is of tremendous value to people who have no time to spare; but I wasn't in that mood when I left Sydney, on New Year's Day, 1947, bound high-ho to London.  I wanted to explore the highways, sky-ways, and by-ways all along Britain's lengthy eastward line of communications, form the antipodes of the south to the antipodes of the north."
