"While many books cover the history of the chair quite adequately, we have in Australia very little information available on the ancestry and origin of the common chair.
Collectors and decorators are familiar with the names and general types of cottage chairs but when it comes to dating a particular piece, establishing its country of origin, and the method of manufacture, the going becomes difficult. As factory production took over from handwork, the quantities produced rose enormously so that our 'Antique' and 'Bric-a-brac' shops are more likely to offer common mass-produced chairs in what seems a never ending supply."
