“This account of Methodism is an important contribution to South Australia’s history. For much of the State’s history, Methodism claimed the allegiance of almost a quarter of the population. Measured in terms of church attendance and popular participation, it was an influential and widespread religious movement. In many country areas it was the dominant church. For decades it helped to mould the lives of scores of thousands of South Australians.
The author has used published and manuscript sources to give a comprehensive survey of Methodism form 1836 to the formation of the Uniting Church in 1977. It is the only history of Methodism in South Australia written since 1886. Dr Hunt combines a critical approach with an extensive knowledge and understanding of the Methodist tradition.”
