“The Sepik River area is one of the last frontiers of unspoilt beauty.  Located in the north-west of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea, it is divided into two administrative sections: the East and West Sepik Districts.
Together, these form an area of over 30,000 square miles of flat riverine swamps with grass and reed marshes, with forest-covered mountains flanking the river valley.
The indigenous population today produces copra, coffee, and rice, and hunt crocodiles for their skins.  The Sepik River is a major artery of transport, and motor boats, house boats and canoes carry food and goods along its course.  Trading today is generally with Australian currency, though some transactions are still carried out in traditional style with shell-money and barter.”
