"This is a vivid, personal story of a journey round the world - 'a proud place, peopled with men of positive quality...'  Joy Packer was more interested in the people of the new worlds she discovered with such enthusiasm than int eh sights suggested by the guide books.
She sets out from Cape Town in a small twelve passenger cargoboat, sails up the east coast of Africa to Lourenco Marques, where the 'small world' of the ship alters course for Perth in Western Australia.
From there she journeys into the Australian Outback - to remote mining-towns, to sheep and cattle stations and to Broken Hill, the New South Wales base of the Royal Flying Doctors Service.  From Broken Hill she flies hundreds of miles with the Flying Doctor on missions of mercy.  She also studies the School of the Air, that 'world of voices' which helps to educate the children of the Outback and plays a valiant part in the fight against isolation."
