“Foreword: I first developed interest in the story of Burke and Wills when I and the poet Bartlett Adamson, visited their famous Depot Camp 65, on Cooper’s Creek, near the present one-pub town of Innamincka.
This visit is briefly described in my book Roaming Round the Darling.  After seeing the marked tree and its dramatic inscription DIG, I was impelled to obey the mute message, and accordingly commenced to dig – in the Mitchell Library, Sydney, the National Library, Canberra, and in other libraries, including my own – reading all available books, journals, and documents relating to the expedition.  Moved by the deeds of Burke and Wills, I also commenced exploring, and have since visited the country through which they travelled, seeking traces of a fateful chapter in Australia’s history.
The result of this literary digging and exploration is here presented.  For the first time, I believe, the complete story of Burke and Wills is now told in a continuous narrative within the covers of one book.”
