“In 1968 Elizabeth Durack was commissioned by the Department of External Territories to portray some of the womenfolk in Papua and New Guinea, and this book consists of a selection from the hundreds of portrait and landscape sketches she made during her travels through the Territory.
Elizabeth Durack found that as the country moves towards political independence and economic self-sufficiency many of the women in New Guinea are accepting this challenge and adapting their roles to meet the contingencies of modern life.  However, in many areas the centuries-old way of life continues for women, and Miss Durack has balanced  her selection of drawings with examples of both the new and traditional roles women play in New Guinea life.”
