“This collection of prose and verse drawn from Australian literature also follows the general arrangement set by the first of the series, A Book of Scotland. The special character of Australian history and literature naturally makes this book differ in some important respects from the other books in the series.
This book has drawn freely upon these folk songs since they present the popular spirit in a form which, however limited in literary quality, is often vigorous and racy of the soil. They are the voice, crude and realistic, of the people themselves. On the other hand, space has been found for a few of the sophisticated visitors from overseas, such as Mark Twain and Trollope, D. H. Lawrence, and Dr. Thomas Wood, who saw the Australian scene freshly and perceptively.”
