“The Legacy Club of Adelaide, founded in 1928, has had a second generation of furious activity since the end of World War II.  This book tells that story.  At war’s end there were many new young widows with families to help, along with the widows from World War I.  The men of Legacy, themselves ex-servicemen, undertook the task as an obligation laid on them buy their deceased colleagues, with no hope of reward.  They arranged financial and medical help fo the women, counselled them, and organised clubs and camps for the children.  The Club had always taken pride in its ability to raise the necessary funds for its work and as previously the community responded will to appeals for support.  As the numbers of children began to fall from the peak of 2700 in the 1970s the Club re-examined its tasks and its workforce.  Out of this emerged a renewed commitment to the nearly 12,000 widows of deceased ex-servicemen in SA and Broken Hill, supported by a Club now made up of ex-servicemen and others of a like mind.  The generation of service began in the 1940s is almost at an end, though the Club’s work is not, A group of active widows from World War I still meets regularly at Legacy House in Adelaide and the total number of widows slowly grows month by month.  The work will be carried on by the younger men for another thirty years, seeking support from a generous community and serving their charges to ‘keep fair the name of Legacy.’
