“Preface:
The idea of this booklet was born one morning in 1966 when I was in the office of Mr. Don Woolley, the Resident Geologist of the Mines Branch of the Department of the Northern Territory, Alice Springs.
Our business was interrupted through the arrival of a visitor – an American lady seeking information on the geological history of the area.  She was obviously interested in the subject, but lost in the technical information which was all Mr. Woolley was able to produce from his library.
After she left I asked Mr Woolley if there was a book available which would explain the geology of Central Australia in simple language to the layman.  When he answered “No” I suggested that he write one.
He agreed, and this booklet is the result.  It represents the professional knowledge of this district which Mr. Woolley acquired in seven years’ field experience.  The guiding principle has been to keep the use of technical terms to a minimum, and to define them when their use is necessary…. It remains only to say the Central Australia is a fascinating scenic and geological country.  The Land – with its mountains and rivers, hills and creeks, gaps and chasms – is a textbook in itself and of absorbing interest geologically to the expert and the beginner.”
