'Jeff Carter takes the reader from the rainforest of eastern Australia to the shifting sand of the Simpson Desert, and even to a look at European zoos and European ideas of camping in the wild. In his breezy style he tells of encounters with such people as Taffy Pick, the self-appointed guardian of the Aritunga ghost town; R. M. Williams, the stockman's outfitter; and Maggie, the hermit of Foxground Valley. The author recounts his experiences with William the wombat, Horace the Monika, the wedge-tailed eagles, and other animals at his Wild Country Park. There are vivid descriptions of relocating a plane wreck in the rainforest behind his home, of being stranded by flood in the "dry" interior, and of the world gum-boot throwing contest at Gerringong on the coast south of Sydney.'
