“Our aim has been to present a general picture of development, while choosing one or two examples and concentrating on them so as to illustrate the general by the particular.  For instance, of the explorers, we have emphasized Sturt, giving an account of his journeys that follows his own as closely as possible; but that is not to say that other explorers did not have equally adventurous individual experiences.
In the latter part of the book we have abandoned the general direction of history in favour of a topical approach.  For example, the story of the iron and steel industry illustrates the general field of secondary industry.  Towards the end, I considering the Commonwealth and its place in the world, we have been able to resume the unified approach...”
