In 1936 William Hatfield, travels to Sydney, Brisbane, western Queensland, the Barkly Tablelands, Darwin, the Kimberleys, Derby, Broome, Marble Bar, Meekatharra, Perth, Kalgoorlie, Adelaide, Mt Gambier, Melbourne and back to Sydney in a Hillman Minx car at the invitation of the representatives of the manufacturers to prove its quality. On the way Hatfield considers the European settling and developing of the "hundreds of thousands of square miles of untouched country awaiting occupation once government action by Britain and Australia ends the isolation of the Empty North".
