“The years 1787 and 1788 were years of destiny in cricket. In 1787, Thomas Lord founded his first ground, and the Marylebone Club was formed, playing its first match at Lord’s in 1788. Lord moved a couple of times, taking his turf with him until finally it came to rest at St John’s Wood Road, where now is the headquarters of the famous club, whence cricket has spread to the four corners of the earth.”
