'In this book Lord Casey, Governor General of Australia, tells the story of the lives of two men, a young doctor who emigrated from England to Australia in 1833 and his eldest son, the author's father, who was born in Tasmania in 1846. He has used as his source material the voluminous papers, letters and diaries they left behind them. Each of them lived strenuous lives in the pioneering days of young Australia and as we follow the careers of these two men so we learn not only about each of them as individuals and the way they made their very different lives, but also about the development of Australia itself.'
