"Murdoch had long felt himself misunderstood in Britain, where he was known chiefly as a purveyor of titillation to the masses in the Sun and the news to the World. Few knew that he sprang from a respected newspaper family. His father Sir Keith Murdoch controlled Australia's largest press empire and had high expectations of his only son. He died in 1952 leaving only a small newspaper in Adelaide to Rupert, who had built from it a group operating in Australia, Britain and the United States. To add The Times to it would be the supreme tribute to his father's memory."
