“This is the history of a generation, and in between generation, too young to be participants in the First World War; but old enough to be affected by its aftermath.  Mostly too old to be participants in the Second and, consequently, not given enough influence to direct the postwar years, in which their experiences might have given a better sense of direction.
The author is concerned with the reasons for the retreat from the Churches in his lifetime; not only the factor of disillusionment about the inability of God to prevent the slaughter of millions of innocent victims of war an the bigotry that poisoned relations between Christians but also that if the first casualty of war is truth, the second is charity.
In some ways his book is powerful challenge to the Christian churches to make their functions more relevant to the needs of the community, as they have failed to do so often in the past.
Th author’s reaction to his boarding school may find disagreement form some but to others it will find echoes in the writings of distinguished British political and literary figures.”
