“Throughout the latter years of my life, especially those spent at Bowden Brae, Normanhurst, my thoughts have wandered back to my childhood until the present.  Quite a lot of those thoughts are memories of my early life on the Hill End Gold Fields…of the years I spent underground in the mines and the associations I had working with men of all nationalities, the descendants of whom are scattered through this fair country, Australia.
O the great changes in society, to the days when the Pankhurst girls advocated and got franchise for women in Great Britain... To the days when we celebrated Queen Victoria’s birthday with sports and celebrations, proudly singing “Britannia Rules the Waves”.  To the advancement in modern technology with the computer and lastly but not least is the manufacturing industry producing nuclear weapons of war which threaten our very existence.
Summing it all up, I am convinced that the age 1896-1986 has seen more changes in civilisation than any other period in the history of which I have had the pleasure of reading.
Greed of men for power, wealth and money, in my opinion, will see greater changes in the next 50 years.”
