“Boss Driver was Matt Savage.  He was one of the toughest men of one of the world’s last savage frontiers; the far North-West of Australia during the first two decades of this century.  It was a country in which stockmen were paid extra money for being “hard on blacks” which meant the shooting of Aborigines who had speared cattle.  The white were a more savage breed than the Aborigines, whom they chained, enslaved, and often killed.  Matt tells of one cattleman who chopped the head off an Aboriginal stockboy, and then without even wiping the axe returned to butchering a bullock.
The Aboriginal women were sex-objects, to be used and discarded.  But, in an era when men were ashamed of their relationships with native women, Matt Savage married a Mudburra girl and educated their three pretty daughters as well as he could.”
