“These were Broken Hill’s years of uncertainty and indecision, and it was a period in which the economy remained static. In the climate of inflation of the 1970s, it is difficult to comprehend that, from 1893 to 1906, there had been no increase in wage rates. The 1909 industrial dispute – although unsuccessful in the material sense from the union standpoint – nevertheless had assisted to some extent to re-unite the fragmented Broken hill trade union movement. In the field of technology important progress had been made by the mining companies, as they gradually overcame the problems associated with the recovery of zinc concentrate.”
