"When Doctor Power and his young bride went to a little outback township in the 1920s, they weren't quite sure what lay ahead. They soon found out. "You get your money easy", said an ancient countryman who was making his first visit to a doctor, but the day's work could hold anything from whipping out twenty-eight teeth to making a wild dash for hospital with a girl in the last stages of labour - whose mother had said that she "had a stomach ache". Many of the people were unused to doctoring, like the woman whose cure for a snakebite was to chop off her own fingers. Others called the doctor for such chores as getting rid of unwanted dogs - which he performed successfully that a favourite pet went the same way. There were plenty of dramatic moments, calling for skill in improvising lifesaving techniques, and plenty of humour, pathos, and even tragedy."
