From the Preface: "The centre lathe is one of the oldest forms of machine tool but it still forms an important part of any workshop. Modern machines of this class, built for high speeds and with enclosed gearing, can produce accurate work rapidly on jobs where constant tool changing is not required, while tool room lathes will always be necessary where precision work is undertaken.
The purpose of this book is to review in detail some of the latest centre lathes and to give a general account of centre lathe work in the light of modern conditions"
