Cobbers

by Thomas Wood

Oxford University Press, 1938, [New Edition], b/w photographic frontispiece, hardcover, dustjacket

Good Condition with Fair dustjacket, book has some edge and shelf wear with age-toned pages and remainder line to bottom fore-edge, dustjacket needs repair with many tears and chips and in two pieces with small parts missing (see photographs)

'This book gives an account of a varied and far-reaching journey, but it is not a 'travel book', or anything resembling it.  It is rather a story of a man who met other men in a new country, of an Englishman's friendships with Australians he passed through their country for the first time.  Descriptions of places, experiences, sailing and cattle and timber - all the facts in this book are the outcome of human relationships.  The title is therefore an exact (if limited) description of the book; for its first subject is 'mates', its second Australia; and the two are combined into a delightful narrative of personal impressions of things, places, and people in that remote yet near place, Australia.'
