The pursuit of sexual equality has characterised the post-Second World War years.  During this time there have been three significant phases which have affected the development of feminist theory:
The pre-modern, characterised by fixed order, roles and explanations reinforced by accepted traditions.
The modern, associated with the 1960s and 1970s when the consequences of biological determinism were rejected and the agenda moved to the way society was structured and roles that resulted;
the post-modern of the 1990s to the present when women are encouraged to discover their own subjectivity and construct their experiences into something that is appropriate for them.
Analysing these three eras, Elaine Storkey explains how the complex interactions of social, political and philosophical issues have influenced our understanding of the origins and meanings of human sexuality."
