He became editor of Smith's Weekly in 1938, and it was around this time that he wrote some of his most noted poems, including "Out of Time", "Five Bells" and "Sleep". On his return from the war in 1944, he joined the Sun as chief leader writer and literary editor, and some years later moved over to the Daily Telegraph.

He created the famous "Virgil girls", which first appeared in Smith's Weekly in the 1920s. he worked for Smith's Weekly for many years, and also for Sydney's Daily Mirror and Melbourne's Truth.
