'It is a selection of documents which clearly reveal, as contemporaries saw them, the growth and development of some of the principle features of the present Australian educational system as thee took place in New South Wales. The documents presented in this volume are only a part of a much more extensive collection made by Mr. Griffiths. They deal with the period of approximately 100 ears from the first establishment of the "colony" to the passing of the Public Instructions Act of 1880 which firmly established public elementary education in New South Wales.'
