“This book represents my effort to synthesize in as concise a statement as possible the ideas that have permeated my writing in the field of art education during the past decade.  It represents an effort to put together the pieces of an intellectual puzzle, one that has intrigued me since my undergraduate days in Chicago.  As one might suspect, the puzzle is not yet complete and probably never will be.  The task of understanding how it is that people develop their ability to respond to and create visual form is one of the utmost complexity, but even if it were not, I suspect scholars would seek to generate problems around it for the sheer satisfaction that inquiry yields.
Many of the ideas in this book, especially those concerning the way in which curricula can be developed, have emanated from curriculum-development work that my students and I have engaged in at Stanford University since 1967.  This work represents an effort to translate theoretical ideas about artistic learning into a practical program that elementary school teachers can use in their classrooms.  The general curriculum structure that the book describes, the types of instructional support media that are suggested, the various modes of evaluation outlined are, in part, products of that curriculum work.”
