"These hymns , with the pictures, were collected a few at a time for my own children.  for some time previously I had been trying to have them learn our splendid hymns, especially to sing on Sunday evenings, around the piano.  But except for the few hymns which they already knew they preferred to sing from some song books they had, which were illustrated.  Then it occurred to me that if the hymns were accompanied by pictures, they would have the same appeal to the children as the other song books."
