“This book, which covers a group loosely termed ‘finches’, may be open to the criticism that some of the species chosen seem to have been selected on a more or less arbitrary basis. Other readers may expect to find here birds which are quite common but which have not found a place among the species described.
The word ‘finch’ has a very definite scientific connotation, but that is rarely the concern of the aviculturist, for he is much more influenced by popular than by scientific considerations.”
