Preface:
“My previous publication bearing the same title as this book was first published in 1929 and a revised and enlarged edition was issued in 1939, which has since then been used in my grocery classes at the School of Mines, Adelaide, and in similar classes in Melbourne and Brisbane, and in the Correspondence Classes conducted by me, and has had a circulation among grocers generally.  It is now out of print: showing that a book on the grocery commodities written from the Australian viewpoint was necessary, and has been useful.
My experience in over twenty years of teaching grocery as not been unfruitful, in that better methods of teaching have been devised as a result, while the examination requirements of the Institute of Certified Grocers, London, having been revised, I now find it desirable to change the arrangement of the book to some extent; nevertheless, all the old material will be found therein, certain accidental errors have been expunged, and the method of approach has been, in some instances, I think, improved and made less academic and more practical. ”
