'This new edition reflects the changing role of railways in today's Australia. The traditional colonial or state-based systems have given way to a national rail network and regionally-orientated sub-systems. This includes railway lines discarded by mainline railway operators which have found a new lease of life as a 'local tourist feature. Rail heritage groups therefore draw on their local regional base. Accordingly the Guide follows this regionalism using categorization based in the 1993 Federal Government Task Force on Regional Development, with minor amendments to reflect the existing structure of railway networks. Where regions transcend state boundaries, entries have been included in the state where the main commercial or tourist centre is located.'
