“Alice Hammond is a young woman adrift.  After sudden departure of her boyfriend Nick, she finds herself with nowhere to live, pregnant and indecisive about the future.  Her job with a New York publishing company, provides some continuity, but also further proof that most people see her as a ‘reliable drudge’… always helpful, but perhaps a bit too submissive?
Despite a severe case of morning sickness, Alice pounds the streets of Manhattan in search of lodgings but finally ends up sharing with her crusty yet sympathetic grandmother, who lives on fudge and ice-cream and constantly regales Alice with tales of her youth as a Hollywood starlet: “That was the time I met Oliver… offscreen, he looked like nothing, nobody’.”
