'The fascinating history of Hindmarsh began on 12 May 1838 when Governor John Hindmarsh selected an allotment of land west of Adelaide near the road to the port.  Within a few weeks of buying the land the Governor sold it to a group of people who subdivided and re-sold it.  This was the first allotment of land adjacent to the city to be subdivided.'
