“The fascinating history of Hindmarsh began on 12 May 1838 when Governor John Hindmarsh selected an allotment of land west of Adelaide near the road to the port. Within a few weeks of buying the land the Governor sold it to a group of people who subdivided and re-sold it. This was the first allotment of land adjacent to the city to be subdivided. The new township grew quickly. Its position on the road to the port, the main thoroughfare to Adelaide, its proximity to the River Torrens, and its closeness to good farming land accelerated its progress beyond that of similar suburban villages that sprang up around Adelaide in its wake.”
