in the past two months, four legislators - two senators and two congressmen - have either died in accidents or suffered serious injury, a car wreck, a suicide, a plunge down the steps of the Capitol before TV cameras, an epileptic convulsion during a hearing. No apparent pattern - simply a run of bad luck. Or so most people think.
All four happen to be members of the Joint Committee on Practice Guidelines and Medical Ethics - a select group of lawmakers who are drafting legislation that will strictly control the way medicine is practised in the United States.
There's one other link, however. All four are patients of Dr Duncan Lathram, the in plastic surgeon to the rich and powerful in Washington, DC. He has innovated a revolutionary form of cosmetic surgery utilising special implants to speed healing and reduce scarring. But none of Dr Lathram's highly-connected patients realises that his charming, sophisticated facade masks a well of seething rage."
