"The material of Book 1 is sufficient for the first two years of General Science. Although the depth of treatment in many places has been determined by the needs of the more capable student, there is sufficient simple treatment to enable the less capable student to complete the course.
Chapters XXXIV and XXV, which deal with soil and soil water, are treated in rather greater detail than the syllabus requires. Chapter XXIX, on the higher animal, is also presented in some detail in this book, since it is considered important that those children who will not proceed with the study of General Science past the second year stage should, before they discontinue their study, acquire some knowledge of bodily function."
