"The dingo pup, lying wiht his sisters in the cave on Mt. Jagungal in the Snowy Mountains, sees first one pair of black feet and then another passing through snowgrass and rocks near the cavemouth. then one pair of smaller feet falters and stumbles. An Aborigine boy, tired and half asleep, rolls into the cave. The boy, Koonda, takes the pup in his arms, Jinki he calls him, and from that moment the pup's mind is imprinted with the picture of Koonda; from that moment Koonda becomes lord of his life."
